Accounting has a shape most industries do not. Demand concentrates violently around tax deadlines, and the clients worth having are the ones who stay all year on a retainer. The trap is that deadline traffic is easy to buy and mostly one off, while retainer clients are harder to find and worth twenty times more.
An account built around the deadline rush will look busy and earn little.
What do Google Ads cost for an accounting practice?
Around or above the all industry average, and worth it on retainer value.
Across 13,474 US search campaigns the all industry benchmarks were $5.42 per click, $66.69 per lead and an 8.18% conversion rate, per WordStream. Finance and insurance more broadly converts at just 2.64%, so expect accounting to sit somewhere between the two depending on how commercial your keywords are.
| Client type | Value | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| One off personal tax return | Low, seasonal | Volume filler, rarely returns |
| Small business annual accounts | Mid, recurring | Good target, predictable |
| Monthly bookkeeping and payroll | High, recurring | The real prize. Own campaign. |
| Advisory, restructuring, sale prep | Highest | Low volume, long cycle, high margin |
What this means for you: bid against the annual value of a retainer client, not the fee for one return. A business at $400 a month for three years is worth $14,400. That supports a cost per enquiry no one bidding on single returns can match.
Plan the year around the deadlines, not the months
This is the seasonality that defines the category.
Search volume climbs steeply in the weeks before a filing deadline and collapses afterwards. Every competitor moves at the same time, so costs rise exactly when demand does.
What to do about it:
- Do not be budget limited in the run up. The weeks before a deadline are when people actually choose an accountant. Being capped then is the most expensive mistake available.
- Shift the message off season. Outside the rush, advertise bookkeeping, payroll and switching accountants rather than tax returns.
- Do not pause between peaks. Lower budgets instead, so Smart Bidding stays settled. Our post on bidding strategies covers why restarts cost you.
- Target switchers all year. “Change accountant” and “unhappy with my accountant” traffic is small, constant and unusually valuable.
Sell switching, because that is the real decision
Most businesses already have an accountant. They are not searching because they have none. They are searching because something went wrong: missed deadlines, no communication, a surprise bill, or they outgrew the firm.
That changes the landing page entirely. The questions on the reader’s mind are practical:
- How hard is it to move? Who talks to the old accountant?
- Will anything be missed in the handover?
- What does it cost, roughly, and is it fixed or hourly?
A page answering those three converts far better than one listing services. Fixed pricing in particular removes the biggest objection in the category. Our post on high converting landing pages covers the rest.
Optimize toward signed clients, not enquiries
Accounting enquiries include a lot of price checking. Someone collecting three quotes will convert on your form and never call back.
Send signed clients back into Google Ads with a value reflecting expected annual fees, and keep raw enquiries as a secondary action. That teaches the bidding to find businesses rather than shoppers.
From 15 June 2026 Google moved offline conversion imports to the Data Manager API and blocked them in the Google Ads API, so check any older CRM integration. Our guide to conversion tracking covers the setup.
The negatives that matter
Tax search volume is overwhelmingly people trying to do it themselves.
- DIY. How to file, tax calculator, deadline dates, what can I claim, allowances.
- Software. Brand names of accounting and tax software, unless you resell or support them.
- Careers. Accountant salary, qualification routes, exams, jobs, training contracts.
- Free. Free tax help, government services, charities, unless that is your offering.
- Refund seekers. Tax refund, rebate, unless you run that as a service line.
Our post on negative keywords covers building the list.
How to choose an agency for an accounting firm
- “What will we bid against?” Retainer lifetime value, not the fee for one return.
- “What is the plan outside tax season?” A good answer changes the message. A weak one says pause.
- “How will signed clients get back into the account?” Enquiry counts are not enough.
- “How will you handle the deadline spike?” Look for budget headroom agreed in advance.
- “What would make you tell us to stop?” No answer means they are selling.
Our post on choosing a Google Ads agency covers contracts and management pricing covers fee models.
Common questions
How much should a practice spend?
Work back from retainer clients. Decide how many you want to add this year, divide by the share of enquiries that sign, and multiply by cost per enquiry. Load the budget toward the deadline weeks.
Should we advertise personal tax returns?
Only if you genuinely want that work. It is seasonal, price sensitive and rarely becomes a retainer. Many practices use it to fill capacity and nothing more.
Should we publish prices?
Fixed monthly pricing converts well in this category because it removes the fear of an open ended bill. If you cannot publish a figure, publish a range or a starting point.
Is Google Ads better than referrals?
Referrals will always be your best channel. Ads fill the gap between them and let you choose which type of client you want more of, which referrals do not.
How long before it works?
Ninety days for enquiry patterns, and a full deadline cycle to judge properly. Do not assess a seasonal account on a quiet quarter.
Where to go from here
Do one calculation. Take your average monthly retainer, multiply by the average number of months a client stays, and multiply by your enquiry to client rate. That is what you can afford per enquiry. Compare it to what you are bidding now.
