Three buyers, three kinds of searches

A repair search, a car search and a loan search

A driver hears a grinding noise and types “brake repair near me.” She wants to call now. A car shopper types “used Honda CR-V” and looks at a few lots. Another buyer types “car finance bad credit” and fears being turned down. Each wants something else, so each needs its own ads.

For a repair shop, we build Search ads around each job. We show them only to people within a short drive. For a dealer, we run model ads and vehicle ads that show the cars on your lot today. For a lender, we sort searches by intent. Ready buyers and people checking rates see different ads.

The searches that look right but never buy

Car searches are full of people who will never be your customer. A shop pays for “how to replace brake pads” from DIY drivers. A dealer pays for “what is my car worth” and for models you do not stock. A lender pays for people who only want a loan calculator. We block these with negative keywords from day one.

This matters more now. In WordStream’s data, cost per lead for vehicle sales rose 13.90% in a year. WordStream says the rise lines up with industries hit by tariffs. When each lead costs more, every wasted click hurts more.

Count the job, the visit or the loan

A click is not a car sold or a car fixed

For a shop, most leads are phone calls. We only count calls that last long enough to be real. Then we send the value of each finished repair order to Google Ads. That shows bidding which calls became paid work. For a dealer, a form is not a sale. We track calls, test drive bookings, and which leads visited the showroom, through offline imports from your sales system.

For a lender, speed matters. In the UK lender account, conversions only arrived via an offline upload, so Smart Bidding could not learn in real time. We moved it off that setup, so bidding learned from leads as they came in.

Auto finance is its own business

Finance leads are judged on credit, not count

A lender cannot just buy more leads. A lead who cannot get approved costs money to handle and earns nothing. Finance ads also have rules on how rates and terms are shown, and those rules change by country. So your compliance team signs off on the ad copy before it runs.

A UK auto finance lender came to us with 64 campaigns and 1,662 keywords. We cut that to 8 campaigns and 190 keywords. Cost per lead fell from £27.53 to £16.14. Conversions rose 72%, while spend rose less than 1%.

Want to know what your leads really cost?

Give us read access to your account. We will show you where the spend goes, which searches never buy, and whether your calls are being counted at all.

Built around how your sale closes

A repair, a car sale and a car loan close in different ways. Our work follows that.

We ask what a lead is worth to you

A shop cares about repair order value. A dealer cares about gross profit per car. A lender cares about loans that fund. We set goals from your numbers, so bidding chases the work you actually want.

Seasons planned before they arrive

AC repairs climb in summer. Battery and tire work picks up when it turns cold. Used car demand often jumps around tax refund season. We shift budget ahead of these swings instead of reacting late.

Fewer campaigns, clearer reports

Accounts with dozens of campaigns hide what works. We keep the structure simple and split by intent. Your weekly and monthly reports show booked jobs, showroom visits or approved leads, not just clicks.

Questions car businesses ask before hiring us

Have you run ads for a dealer or a repair shop before?

Our published automotive result is from a UK auto finance lender, not a dealer or a shop. We would rather say that than stretch it. What carries over is the method: tight campaigns, clean tracking and strict negative keywords. What changes is the goal, which is booked jobs for a shop and showroom visits for a dealer. See all of our published case studies.

How much should a shop or dealer spend on Google Ads?

Work back from the extra work you can take on. Pick how many more jobs or car sales you want each month. Divide that by how often a lead turns into a sale, then multiply by your cost per lead. WordStream’s medians are $29.96 a lead for repair and $44.26 for vehicle sales. Our budget guide walks through it.

Can you track phone calls and customers who just walk in?

Calls, yes. Walk-ins are harder. We track calls from your ads and your website, and we only count calls that last long enough to be real. A walk-in can be matched back to an ad if that person called or filled out a form first. We do that with an offline import from your shop or sales system.

How do you keep auto finance ads compliant?

Your compliance team approves every ad before it goes live. Lending ads have rules on how rates, fees and terms are shown, and those rules differ between the US and the UK. We write copy that states the offer plainly and makes no promise of approval. If a line needs changing, we change it before it runs, not after.

What numbers should we bring to the first call?

Bring what a sale is worth to you. For a shop, that means your average repair order and how many bays you can fill. For a dealer, it means the models you need to move and your inventory feed. For a lender, it means how many leads get approved. Those numbers shape the whole account.
