Key Takeaways

A Google keyword suggestion tool lists the searches Google autocomplete predicts when people type your product or service, including longer versions with words like "near me", "cost" or "how much". Google says these predictions reflect real searches, so they show how customers phrase what they want. They do not show search volume; you check that in Google Keyword Planner.

  • Google autocomplete returns up to 10 predictions per lookup, so this tool runs your seed up to 40 times per search with modifiers added before or after it.
  • A default search makes 24 lookups; for "kitchen remodel" in the United States in October 2026 it returned 179 unique keyword ideas.
  • Autocomplete predictions reflect real Google searches, but Google says autocomplete does not simply show the most common queries, so the order is not a volume ranking.
  • Google Ads keywords can be at most 80 characters and 10 words, and the tool flags any suggestion that breaks either limit.
  • Negative keywords do not match close variants, so "job" and "jobs" must both be added; the tool lists both forms when it finds them.

How to Use the Google Ads Keyword Suggestion Tool

  1. Enter a seed keyword

Type the product or service you advertise in two or three words, such as "kitchen remodel" or "emergency plumber". Short seeds return more suggestions than long ones.

  2. Pick country, language and modifiers

Choose where your customers search. Buyer modifiers, questions and prepositions are on by default (24 lookups). Add A to Z for 26 more variations; anything over 40 runs on request.

  3. Filter by intent

Use the intent filter to show only buyer and local searches, only questions, or only low intent terms. Type in the filter box to narrow by a word such as "cost".

  4. Build your list

Tick the ideas you want, press Add to list, and edit the list freely. Copy it, export it as CSV, or open the Match Type Tool to wrap it in broad, phrase or exact match.

  5. Check volume and bids

Paste your shortlist into Google Keyword Planner to see average monthly searches and top of page bid ranges before you launch.

Where do these keyword suggestions come from?

Every idea is pulled live from Google autocomplete, the list of predictions that drops down as you type in the Google search box. Google's own help page says that once you start typing, autocomplete predictions reflect real searches that have been done on Google, and that the language of the query, the location it comes from and trending interest all shape what appears. That is why the tool asks for a country and a language. Typed in the United States, "plumber" brings back "plumber salary" and "plumber costume"; typed in the United Kingdom, it also brings back "plumbers merchants near me".

One lookup only returns up to 10 predictions, so the tool asks Google many times, each time with a word added before or after your seed. Here is what each mode adds, with real predictions Google returned for "kitchen remodel" in the US in October 2026:

ModeLookupsWhat it addsReal exampleBest use
Top suggestions1Your seed on its ownkitchen remodel contractors near meCore ad group themes

Prepositions6for, near, with, without, vs, tokitchen remodel with financingNiche offers and audiences
A to Z26Each letter after the seedkitchen remodel budgetLong tail and city names

Some modifiers return nothing. Nobody types "who kitchen remodel", so Google has no prediction for it, and that is useful information too. Results are cached for 24 hours, so repeating a search is instant.

Why does this keyword suggestion tool not show search volume?

Because autocomplete does not provide it, and a made-up number is worse than no number. Google states that autocomplete doesn't simply display the most common queries on a given topic. The order of suggestions is a prediction, not a popularity ranking. Any free tool that prints volumes next to autocomplete ideas is estimating them or pulling them from a separate data source.

For real numbers, paste your shortlist into Google Keyword Planner. According to Google's Keyword Planner documentation:

  • Avg. monthly searches counts searches for the keyword and its close variants, and historical stats are only shown for exact matches.
  • Top of page bid (low range) is roughly the 20th percentile of what advertisers paid to show at the top of the page.
  • Top of page bid (high range) is roughly the 80th percentile.
  • Both bid columns use the last 30 days, and keywords with little bid history may show none.

Keyword Planner is free, but Google asks you to finish account setup, including billing information, before you can use "Get ideas for new keywords". A sensible workflow is this tool first for phrasing, Keyword Planner second for volume and bids.

How do you sort keyword suggestions by intent?

Not every search is worth paying for. The tool tags each idea using the words the searcher added to your seed, so a seed like "emergency plumber" does not make every result look local. The rules are written for English searches:

TagSignal wordsWhat to do in Google Ads
Buyerprice, cost, best, company, service, hire, quote, repair, installBid on these first, in tight ad groups
Localnear me, nearby, open now, emergency, 24 hour, same dayBid, and make sure location targeting matches your service area
Questionhow, what, why, can, is, doesAnswer them in ads and on the landing page; bid when they mention price
Generalno clear signalTest with phrase or exact match and watch the search terms report
Low intentjobs, salary, course, free, diy, ideas, meaningReview as negative keywords

Treat the tags as a first sort, not a verdict. "Ideas" is tagged low intent, yet a kitchen design studio may want "kitchen remodel ideas" traffic, and "kitchen remodel costco" looks like a cost search but is about a retailer. Read every keyword before it goes into a campaign. The tool also marks any idea over the Google Ads keyword limit of 80 characters and 10 words.

How many keyword suggestions should you put in a new campaign?

Fewer than most people think. Every keyword needs enough clicks to show whether it converts, and a small budget spread over a long list never gets there. Here is the math for a home improvement business with a $100 daily budget, using the WordStream by LocaliQ 2026 Google Ads benchmarks for Home & Home Improvement (median CPC $8.33, median conversion rate 8.05%, US search campaigns, April 2025 to March 2026):

  1. Monthly spend: Google's budget help uses 30.4 days per month, so $100 × 30.4 = $3,040.
  2. Clicks: $3,040 ÷ $8.33 = about 365 clicks a month.
  3. Leads: 365 × 8.05% = about 29 leads a month.
  4. Spread over 40 keywords, that is about 9 clicks and 0.7 leads per keyword per month: not enough to judge any of them.
  5. Spread over 10 keywords, it is about 36 clicks and 2.9 leads per keyword per month: enough to see winners within a few weeks.

So pick the 10 to 15 strongest buyer and local ideas for launch, keep the rest in your exported list, and add them once the first set has data. Our Google Ads management team starts accounts the same way: a short list of high intent keywords, tight ad groups and a long negative list from day one.

Which keyword suggestions should become negative keywords?

Autocomplete is full of searches you should block. Typed alone in the US, "plumber" returns "plumbers tape", "plumbers putty", "plumber salary" and "plumber apprentice jobs": shoppers buying a product and people looking for work, not homeowners who need a plumber. The tool collects words like these into a Possible negative keywords list you can copy in one click.

Two rules from Google's help page about negative keywords matter here:

  • Negative keywords do not match close variants, so you need to add singular and plural forms and synonyms yourself. Blocking "job" does not block "jobs".
  • Negative keywords already account for casing and misspellings, so you do not need to add those.

Before you block a word, check it against your business. "Free" is a waste for a contractor, but "free estimate" is a buyer search, so the tool does not flag it. For the match type side, see Google's match type definitions and our guide to Google Ads match types.

How is this different from Google Keyword Planner?

They answer different questions, and the best keyword lists use both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Google keyword suggestion tool free?

Yes. There is no signup, no account and no daily credit counter. Each search makes up to 40 Google autocomplete lookups, and results are cached for 24 hours so repeat searches are instant.

Where does the tool get its keyword suggestions?

From Google autocomplete, the predictions Google shows as you type a search. Google says these predictions reflect real searches and depend on the language, the location and trending interest, so the tool lets you choose a country and a language.

Why does the tool not show search volume or CPC?

Google autocomplete does not provide either, and Google says autocomplete does not simply show the most common queries. Rather than show estimates, the tool leaves volume out. Use Google Keyword Planner for average monthly searches and top of page bid ranges.

Why are my results different from what I see when I type into Google?

Google also uses your past searches when it predicts, and your own results depend on where you are. The tool’s lookups are not signed in, so they show predictions without your personal history for the country and language you choose.

Can I use it in languages other than English?

Yes. You can choose from 42 countries and 25 languages. The buyer, question and preposition modifiers are English words, so for other languages the A to Z mode gives the cleanest results, and the intent tags work best on English searches.

How do I add match types to the keywords?

Build your list, then press Copy and open Match Type Tool. Your list is copied to the clipboard and the Match Type Tool opens, where you can paste it and wrap every keyword in broad, "phrase" or [exact] match at once.

Is this the same as the old AdWords keyword suggestion tool?

No. Google’s old AdWords keyword tool was retired and replaced by Keyword Planner inside Google Ads. This tool covers the idea finding part without an account, and Keyword Planner covers volume and bid estimates.

Can I use these keyword suggestions for SEO too?

Yes. The question suggestions in particular make good blog topics and FAQ entries, because they are phrased exactly the way people type them. For SEO, check volume and competition in a separate tool before you commit to a topic.
