Key Takeaways

To calculate a Google Ads budget, divide the leads you want by your conversion rate to get the clicks you need, then multiply clicks by your average cost per click. Divide the monthly figure by 30.4 for the average daily budget. For 40 leads at an 8% conversion rate and a $5 CPC, you need 500 clicks and $2,500 a month, or $82.24 a day.

  • Monthly Google Ads budget = (leads wanted ÷ conversion rate) × average CPC.
  • Google can spend up to 2 times your average daily budget on a given day, but you are charged no more than 30.4 times the daily budget in a month.
  • A dentist who wants 40 leads a month at the 2026 median of $8.00 per click and a 10.67% conversion rate needs about 375 clicks and $2,999 a month, or $98.65 a day.
  • The most you can afford per lead is sale value × gross margin × close rate; a $1,200 sale at 60% margin and a 30% close rate is worth $216 per lead.
  • Plan for CPCs 25% above your estimate as well as at it: the same lead goal then needs 25% more budget.

How to Use the Google Ads Budget Calculator

  1. Choose a mode

Pick I have a goal to turn leads or sales into a budget, or I have a budget to see how many clicks, leads and customers a budget should bring.

  2. Pick your industry

The calculator fills in the 2026 median CPC and conversion rate for your industry from WordStream by LocaliQ. Edit both if you have your own account data or Keyword Planner estimates.

  3. Enter what a lead is worth

Add your close rate, average sale value and gross margin. These turn leads into customers, revenue, profit and ROAS, and give you a break-even CPC.

  4. Set the daily budget

Enter the average daily budget the calculator shows into your Google Ads campaign settings, and check the low and high CPC scenarios before you commit.

How do you calculate a Google Ads budget?

Work backward from the result you want. Each step uses one number you know or can estimate:

StepFormulaExample (dentist)
1. Leads neededSales goal ÷ close rate12 patients ÷ 30% = 40 leads
2. Clicks neededLeads ÷ conversion rate40 ÷ 10.67% = 375 clicks
3. Monthly budgetClicks × average CPC374.9 × $8.00 = $2,999
4. Daily budgetMonthly budget ÷ 30.4$2,999 ÷ 30.4 = $98.65
5. Cost per leadCPC ÷ conversion rate$8.00 ÷ 10.67% = $74.98

The $8.00 CPC and 10.67% conversion rate are the 2026 medians for dentists and dental services from WordStream by LocaliQ. Swap in your own figures as soon as you have 30 days of account data.

How does Google Ads spend your daily budget?

Google Ads budgets are set as an average per day, not a hard daily cap. Google's rules, from its help page on overdelivery and the average daily budget:

  • On a given day, a campaign can spend up to 2 times its average daily budget to catch busy traffic.
  • Over a month, you are charged no more than 30.4 times the average daily budget. 30.4 is the average number of days in a month.
  • If served costs go over those limits, you are not charged for the excess.

Worked example: a $98.65 daily budget can spend up to $197.30 on a busy Tuesday, but the month's charges stay at or below $98.65 × 30.4 = $2,999. That is why the calculator divides your monthly budget by 30.4, not by 30 or 31.

How much should you budget for Google Ads in your industry?

Here is what 30 leads a month costs at each industry's 2026 median CPC and conversion rate. Your keywords, location and landing page will move these numbers, so treat them as a starting point.

The calculator covers all 23 industries. If yours is a trade such as HVAC, plumbing or roofing, use Home & Home Improvement, the closest published category.

How do you know if a Google Ads budget will be profitable?

Compare what a lead costs with what it is worth. A lead is worth sale value × gross margin × close rate. Break-even CPC is that value × conversion rate.

  1. Average sale $1,200 × 60% margin = $720 gross profit per customer.
  2. $720 × 30% close rate = $216 per lead.
  3. $216 × 10.67% conversion rate = $23.05 break-even CPC.

At an $8.00 CPC, leads cost $74.98 and are worth $216, so the plan earns money with room to spare: 12 customers bring $14,400 in revenue, $8,640 in gross profit and $5,641 after the $2,999 ad spend, a 4.8x ROAS. If your break-even CPC is below the CPC you expect to pay, fix conversion rate or close rate before adding budget. For help building that plan, see Clickem's Google Ads management.

Why plan with low and high CPC scenarios?

Your real CPC depends on the keywords you bid on, your Quality Score, your location targeting and how many competitors bid that week. A median is a midpoint, not a promise. With the same 40-lead goal and a 10.67% conversion rate:

ScenarioCPCMonthly budgetDaily budget
Low (-25%)$6.00$2,249$73.99
Median$8.00$2,999$98.65
High (+25%)$10.00$3,749$123.32

If only the low row works for you, the plan is fragile. The calculator lets you widen the range to 40% and adds a break-even row so you can see how much CPC can rise before profit hits zero.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I spend on Google Ads per month?

Enough to buy the clicks your lead goal needs: leads ÷ conversion rate × CPC. At the 2026 all-industry medians of a $5.42 CPC and an 8.18% conversion rate, 30 leads cost about $1,988 a month. Your industry and location can move that a lot, so run your own numbers.

Why does Google Ads divide by 30.4?

30.4 is the average number of days in a month (365 ÷ 12). Google charges no more than 30.4 times your average daily budget in a month, so dividing your monthly budget by 30.4 gives the daily budget to enter.

Can Google Ads spend more than my daily budget?

Yes, on a given day a campaign can spend up to 2 times its average daily budget. Over the month, Google says you will not be charged more than 30.4 times the daily budget, and you are not charged for costs above those limits.

What conversion rate should I use in a Google Ads budget?

Use your own account’s click to lead rate from the last 30 to 90 days if you have it. If not, start with your industry’s 2026 median, which the calculator prefills, and update it after the first month.

Is the minimum Google Ads budget enough to get results?

Google lets you set a small budget, but a budget that buys only a few clicks a day gives too little data to judge the campaign. Work out the clicks your lead goal needs and budget for those, or narrow the goal to fewer, higher-intent keywords.

What is a good ROAS for a Google Ads budget?

Any ROAS above your break-even ROAS, which is 1 ÷ gross margin. At a 60% margin, break-even ROAS is 1.67x; the dentist example reaches 4.8x. The calculator shows ROAS for your plan and each CPC scenario.

Should I plan from leads or from sales?

Plan from sales if you know your close rate, because that ties the budget to revenue. Choose Sales per month and the calculator divides your sales goal by the close rate to find the leads, clicks and budget you need.
