Free Google and Meta Ad Headline Tester

Paste a headline and see whether it fits before you put it in an ad. Google Search headlines are capped at 30 characters and descriptions at 90. Meta cuts text off at different points again.

Why headline length matters

A headline that runs over the limit does not get shortened politely. It gets cut, and the part that made the offer clear is usually the part that disappears. Testing before you paste saves you finding out from a screenshot a week later.

The limits you are working inside

A responsive search ad accepts up to 15 headlines of 30 characters and 4 descriptions of 90 characters. Google shows at least one headline and one description, and adds the second and third when it predicts they will perform or when there is room.

Because you never know which combination will show, every headline has to make sense on its own and next to any other one.

Write for the combination, not the sentence

The most common mistake is fifteen headlines that all say the same thing. Give Google real alternatives: some that match the search, some that name the benefit, some that carry proof, some that handle the objection people raise before they buy.

Google recommends at least two responsive search ads with Good or Excellent Ad Strength per ad group, and reports that going from two to three lifts conversions by an average of 3.7% at a similar cost per conversion.

Test the copy, not just the length

Fitting the box is the easy part. Our guides to Google Ads copywriting and ad copy testing cover how to work out which headlines actually earn the click, and Quality Score explains why relevance changes what you pay.
