Key Takeaways

A Facebook ad headline generator writes the short bold line under the image, plus the primary text above it and the description below the headline. Meta recommends about 125 characters of primary text, 40 for the headline and 25 for the description in most placements, and less in some, such as 27 for a Facebook Feed headline. Longer text is cut off.

  • Meta's general recommendation is 125 characters for primary text, 40 for the headline and 25 for the description; text over that may be truncated.
  • The Meta Ads Guide recommends a 27-character headline and 50 to 150 characters of primary text for Facebook Feed image and video ads.
  • Facebook Feed carousel cards are tighter: 80 characters of primary text, a 20-character headline and an 18-character description.
  • Instagram Reels ads have a recommended primary text of just 44 characters.
  • Meta tells advertisers to keep primary text to 1 to 3 lines and not to imply personal attributes such as age, health or finances with phrases like "Are you bankrupt?"

How to Use the Facebook Ad Headline Generator

  1. Describe the ad

Enter the product, the audience, the main benefit or offer and the facts you can prove, one per line. Pick who sees the ad: a new audience, people who know the brand, or site visitors who did not buy.

  2. Pick a placement

Choose Most placements, Facebook Feed, Instagram Feed, Marketplace, carousel, Stories or Reels. Counts and the preview switch to Meta's recommendation for that placement.

  3. Generate and click through

Press Generate for 12 headlines, 6 primary texts and 6 descriptions. Click any line to place it in the ad preview and see where it would be cut off.

  4. Edit and export

Rewrite any line in place, copy single lines or all of them, or download a CSV that lists each line with its length and whether it fits.

What is the character limit for Facebook ad headlines?

Meta publishes recommended lengths, not hard limits. Its Business Help Center says the recommended text length for most placements is 125 characters for primary text, 40 for the headline and 25 for the description, and that longer text may be truncated and can be cut further on some placements and devices. The Meta Ads Guide then gives tighter numbers for individual placements. These are the figures we checked in October 2026:

How much of your primary text do people see?

Meta's advice is blunt: primary text should span 1 to 3 lines at most, and the most important goal is to tell people what you want them to do at a glance. Whatever runs past the recommended length sits behind a "See more" link that most people never tap.

A worked example. Your primary text is 180 characters and you run it on placements with a 125-character recommendation. 180 minus 125 leaves 55 characters, or 55 divided by 180 = 31% of your message, likely to be hidden. If your offer sits in that last 31%, most of the audience will not see it. Move the offer into the first sentence, or cut the text to 125.

The same check works for headlines. A 34-character headline fits the 40-character general recommendation but runs 7 characters past the 27 recommended for Facebook Feed. The preview in this tool cuts text at the selected placement's number so you can see what is lost.

How do you write a Facebook ad headline that gets clicks?

The headline sits under the image, next to the button, so it does a different job from the primary text. The primary text stops the scroll; the headline confirms what the person gets if they tap. Useful angles, all of which the generator writes:

  • Benefit: the result, stated plainly.
  • Offer: the deal, shipping or trial, only if real.
  • Question: the question the buyer already asks.
  • Everyday situation: when they would use it.
  • Objection answered: price, effort, risk.
  • Product plus outcome: what it is and what it does.

Meta's own text examples push the same way: replace "available at low prices" with an actual price, back a claim with data, quote a real review, and ask a question that captures attention. Do not invent any of those. This tool only uses the facts you type, so add the price, the guarantee or the review quote to the facts box if you want them in the copy.

How many headline and primary text options should you test?

Meta lets you add multiple text options for primary text, headline and description in one single image or video ad, and its system then shows the combination it predicts each person will respond to. Its text generation feature can also suggest up to five variations of primary text and headline. Reporting is at the ad level, so you will not see results per variation.

The number of possible combinations grows quickly. With 3 primary texts, 4 headlines and 2 descriptions, Meta can assemble 3 x 4 x 2 = 24 versions of one ad. That is why each option should take a different angle: if all four headlines say the same thing in different words, the 24 versions are really one. Pick your strongest and most different lines from each column of the generator, and make sure every headline still makes sense next to every primary text, as Meta advises.

Which ad text gets rejected on Facebook and Instagram?

The rule that catches most copywriters is personal attributes. Meta's advertising standards say ads must not assert or imply personal attributes such as race, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical or mental health, financial status or criminal record. The difference is often one word:

Not allowedAllowed
Are you bankrupt?Learn about debt relief options
Do you have diabetes?Depression counseling (a service, no assumption)
Meet other seniorsMeet seniors
Are you Christian?Date Christian singles

The "not allowed" lines and three of the allowed ones are Meta's own examples from its privacy violations and personal attributes policy; the debt relief line is our illustration. The generator flags lines that pair "are you" or "do you have" with these attributes, and lines that say "other" seniors or singles, so you can rewrite them before they reach review.

Should you leave Advantage+ text improvements on?

Meta warns that if you use Advantage+ creative enhancements such as text improvements, the text you upload may be adjusted, and that some enhancements are on by default. If your copy has legal wording, a regulated claim or exact brand language, check those settings before you publish. Meta also says that if you leave the text fields blank, it may pull text from your website. Writing your own lines with a tool like this one keeps you in control of what runs. Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Facebook ad headline generator free?

Yes, it is free with no signup. If the AI service is busy, it falls back to templates built from the facts you entered, so you always get a set of headlines, primary texts and descriptions.

What is the best length for a Facebook ad headline?

Meta recommends 40 characters for most placements and 27 for Facebook Feed image and video ads. Writing to 27 or fewer keeps the headline whole in both.

What is primary text in a Facebook ad?

Primary text is the main copy above the image or video. Meta recommends about 125 characters for most placements and suggests keeping it to 1 to 3 lines.

Where does the description show?

The description is the smaller line under the headline. Meta recommends 25 characters for most placements and lists it only for some placements, such as 30 characters on Marketplace.

Does this work for Instagram ads too?

Yes. Facebook and Instagram ads are created in the same Meta Ads Manager. Pick Instagram Feed, Stories or Reels to see the recommended lengths and an Instagram-style preview.

Is a Facebook ad title the same as a headline?

Yes. Many people say ad title, but Meta calls the bold text under the creative the headline. The generator writes 12 of them per run.

Will the AI make up discounts or reviews?

It is instructed not to. It may only use the offer and facts you enter, and you should read every line before you publish, since you are responsible for claims in your ads.

Can I use more than one headline in the same ad?

Yes. Meta’s multiple text options let you add several headlines, primary texts and descriptions to one ad, and the system chooses which to show each person.
