Google Ads Keywords for Accountants: Full List by Service

The best Google Ads keywords for accountants name a service and a buyer, such as “bookkeeping services for small business”, “tax accountant near me” or “fractional CFO for startups”. Group keywords by service line (bookkeeping, tax, CFO and advisory, payroll, audit), start with exact and phrase match, and block job, course, software and do-it-yourself searches before the first click.

In short:

  • Build one ad group per service, and one campaign per service line that has its own budget and value, so a bookkeeping retainer is never bid like a one-off tax return.
  • Keywords that pair a service with a place (“[city]”, “near me”) or a buyer (“for contractors”, “for startups”) signal hiring intent; “how to”, “what is”, “salary” and “course” signal the opposite.
  • Google’s own help says negative keywords don’t match close variants, so plurals and misspellings of every negative have to be added by hand.
  • The Uniform Accountancy Act, the model law that state accountancy laws largely follow, reserves the titles “certified public accountant” and “CPA” for licensees, so bid on CPA terms only if you hold the license.
  • A responsive search ad takes up to 15 headlines of 30 characters each, which is enough to write service-specific copy for every ad group below.

This is the keyword build for an accounting practice. For strategy, retainer value and seasonality, read our complete guide to Google Ads for accountants; for tax season specifically, see Google Ads for tax preparers. Below are the keyword lists by service, the negatives, the match types and six sample ad groups you can copy.

How should accountants organize Google Ads keywords?

By service first, then by intent. Each service line has a different client value, landing page and close rate, and mixing them in one ad group means one ad and one bid for very different buyers.

Within each service, sort keywords into three intent levels before you add them to the account.

Intent level Signal words Example What to do
Ready to hire near me, [city], services, firm, company, outsourced, hire, for [business type] outsourced bookkeeping for restaurants Core keywords. Exact and phrase match, full bids.
Comparing cost, pricing, fees, best, vs, reviews, switch bookkeeping services cost per month Keep, with a landing page that shows prices or ranges. Lower bids.
Learning or doing it themselves how to, what is, template, example, course, salary, jobs, free, software how to do bookkeeping for a small business Negative keywords. These rarely become clients.

What this means for you: the same service word (“bookkeeping”) appears in all three rows. The modifier around it decides whether you want the click, so your negatives should target modifiers, not the service itself.

Which Google Ads keywords should accountants use for each service?

The lists below are starting points, not volume-ranked lists. Check each term’s search volume and suggested bid for your own cities in Google Keyword Planner before you launch, because demand for accounting services varies a lot by market.

Bookkeeping keywords

  • bookkeeping services near me
  • bookkeeping services [city]
  • small business bookkeeping services
  • outsourced bookkeeping services
  • monthly bookkeeping services
  • virtual bookkeeping services
  • catch up bookkeeping
  • bookkeeping cleanup services
  • quickbooks bookkeeper near me
  • bookkeeper for [contractors, restaurants, ecommerce, real estate]
  • bookkeeping services cost

Bookkeeping is the retainer most practices want, so give it its own campaign and budget. “Catch up” and “cleanup” searches are urgent, often after a missed deadline or a lender request, and deserve their own ad group and page.

Tax keywords (business and personal)

  • tax accountant near me
  • tax accountant [city]
  • small business tax accountant
  • business tax preparation services
  • S corp tax preparation
  • partnership tax return preparer
  • tax planning for small business
  • tax preparation services near me
  • self employed tax accountant
  • tax accountant for [rental property, crypto, expats, physicians]

Split business tax from personal tax. Business tax clients usually become year-round clients, while many personal returns stay one-off. Seasonal pacing and compliance rules for tax ads are covered in our tax preparer guide.

Fractional CFO and advisory keywords

  • fractional CFO services
  • fractional CFO for startups
  • outsourced CFO services
  • part time CFO
  • virtual CFO services
  • cash flow forecasting services
  • financial modeling for fundraising
  • CFO services for small business

Advisory searches are low in volume and high in value. Many of these buyers are not local, so test national or multi-state targeting here even if your bookkeeping and tax campaigns stay local.

Payroll keywords

  • payroll services for small business
  • outsourced payroll services
  • payroll accountant near me
  • payroll services [city]
  • payroll and bookkeeping services
  • multi state payroll services

Payroll is the line most exposed to software. Many payroll searches are looking for a self-service app, so use a “payroll services” phrase core and lean heavily on negatives.

Audit and assurance keywords

  • audit firm [city]
  • CPA audit services
  • financial statement audit
  • review engagement CPA
  • nonprofit audit services
  • 401k plan audit
  • HOA audit
  • SOC 2 audit firm

The Uniform Accountancy Act, the model most state accountancy laws follow, bars firms without a CPA firm permit from providing attest services, so this list is for licensed CPA firms only. Searches are specific and B2B, and buyers often need the audit by a date set by a lender, a board or a regulator.

Switching and general firm keywords

  • change accountant
  • new accountant for my business
  • accounting firm near me
  • accounting firm [city]
  • small business accountant [city]
  • accountant for [LLC, startups, contractors, dentists]
  • CPA near me (licensed firms only)
  • CPA firm [city] (licensed firms only)

General firm terms are broad, so send them to a page that lists your services and lets the visitor choose. Switching terms are small and steady all year, and those searchers already pay for an accountant, which makes them easier to convert than first-time buyers.

To turn these lists into every service and city combination quickly, paste your services and cities into the keyword mixer.

What negative keywords should accountants add?

Add negatives for jobs, education, software, do-it-yourself and government searches before launch. Accounting is a profession people train for and a task people try themselves, and both groups search with the same words as your clients.

  • Jobs and careers: jobs, careers, hiring, salary, pay, internship, entry level, remote job, resume, interview, “big 4”, recruiter, “become an accountant”, “bookkeeper job”.
  • Education and credentials: course, class, training, degree, certification, CPA exam, study, CPE, “how to become”, school, online course, textbook.
  • Software use: login, sign in, download, app, pricing plan, free trial, support, “customer service”, tutorial. Use these as phrase-match modifiers (“quickbooks login”) rather than negating the software brand, because “quickbooks bookkeeper” is a buyer.
  • Do it yourself: how to, template, spreadsheet, excel, example, pdf, calculator, what is, definition, meaning, journal entry, chart of accounts.
  • Free and government: free, irs.gov, IRS phone number, refund status, SBA, SCORE, VITA.
  • Wrong service: accounting software, accounting firm ranking, accountant jokes, forensic accountant (unless you offer it), financial advisor (unless you offer it).

Google states that negative keywords don’t match close variants, so “job” does not block “jobs”. Add both forms, or use the negative keyword generator to create the variants. Our existing guide covers the logic in more detail in why negative keywords matter.

Which keyword match types should accountants use?

Start with exact and phrase match on your core service terms, and add broad match only once Smart Bidding has steady conversion data and a strong negative list. Here is how Google defines the three match types.

Match type Notation Google’s definition Use it for
Exact [small business bookkeeping] Searches with the same meaning or same intent as the keyword Your best service plus location and service plus buyer terms. Highest bids.
Phrase “bookkeeping services” Searches that include the meaning of the keyword Catching longer versions with a city, industry or “near me” you did not list.
Broad bookkeeping services Searches related to the keyword, which can include searches that don’t contain its direct meaning Later, with Smart Bidding, enough conversions and weekly search term reviews.

What this means for you: broad match on “accountant” can show your ad for accountant jobs, accounting courses and accounting software, because they are related searches. Exact and phrase keep you near the service until you have data to trust automation. Test how a term would be written in each type with the keyword match type tool, and read more in our post on Google Ads match types.

What do good accounting ad groups look like?

A good ad group has five to fifteen tightly related keywords, ads that repeat the service in the headline and a landing page about that one service. These six cover most small and mid-size practices.

Ad group Example keywords Example headlines (30 characters or fewer) Landing page
Small business bookkeeping [small business bookkeeping services], “bookkeeping services [city]”, [outsourced bookkeeping] Monthly Bookkeeping From $X; Books Closed by the 10th Bookkeeping page with monthly price range and what is included
Catch-up bookkeeping [catch up bookkeeping], “bookkeeping cleanup”, [behind on bookkeeping] Behind on Your Books?; Catch-Up Bookkeeping Help Cleanup page with turnaround time and how pricing works
Business tax [small business tax accountant], “S corp tax preparation”, “business tax accountant [city]” Accurate Business Tax Returns; S Corp and LLC Tax Returns Business tax page with deadlines and document checklist
Fractional CFO [fractional cfo services], “outsourced cfo”, [part time cfo] Fractional CFO Services; Forecasts Your Board Trusts CFO page with engagement types and a call booking form
Payroll [payroll services for small business], “outsourced payroll services” Payroll Handled Every Cycle; Payroll Plus Bookkeeping Payroll page that says what you do that software does not
Switching accountant [change accountant], “new accountant for my business”, “switch accountants” Switching Accountants Is Easy; We Handle the Handover Switching page: steps, timeline, who contacts the old firm

What this means for you: each row has its own message and page, so the ad matches the search and the page matches the ad. Replace “$X” with a real figure only if you will honor it. A responsive search ad can hold up to 15 headlines of up to 30 characters, so write several per ad group and test which service claims earn the click.

Can accountants bid on “CPA” and competitor keywords?

Bid on CPA terms only if you are a licensed CPA or CPA firm. The Uniform Accountancy Act, published by the AICPA and NASBA as a model for state accountancy laws, reserves the titles “certified public accountant” and “CPA” for certificate holders and bars unlicensed firms from calling themselves CPA firms. Your own state’s accountancy law is what applies, so check it.

If you are an enrolled agent or bookkeeper, a click on “CPA near me” can still be a good lead, but your ad cannot claim the title. Write the ad around what you are (“Enrolled Agent, Small Business Tax”) and let the searcher decide.

Competitor names are a separate question. Google’s trademark policy says it does not restrict trademarks used as keywords, but trademarks in ad text can be restricted, for example in ads from a direct competitor. Competitor campaigns in accounting usually have low click-through rates and high costs, so if you test one, keep it small and separate.

Should accountants use Local Services Ads as well as keywords?

For tax work, often yes. Tax services and financial planning services are Local Services Ads categories in the US, which charge when a customer contacts you rather than per click.

General accounting and bookkeeping are not listed as their own category on that page. So for bookkeeping, payroll, CFO and audit work, keyword campaigns are still the main way to show up on Google’s ad results.

Common questions

What are the best Google Ads keywords for accountants?

Keywords that combine a service with a place or a buyer type, such as “small business bookkeeping services [city]”, “S corp tax preparation” or “fractional CFO for startups”. They show hiring intent and let you match the ad and page to one service.

Should accountants use broad match?

Not at the start. Broad match can show ads on related searches that do not contain your keyword’s meaning, which in accounting means jobs, courses and software. Add it once Smart Bidding has steady conversion data and you review search terms every week.

How many negative keywords does an accounting firm need?

There is no set number. Start with the six groups above, about 60 terms before plurals and misspellings, and add new ones from the search terms report weekly. In tax season, check daily for the first two weeks.

Is PPC worth it for accountants?

It is when you bid against the value of a retained client rather than a single return. WordStream and LocaliQ’s 2026 benchmarks do not publish an accounting category; the closest, Finance and Insurance, had a median cost per click of $3.39 and a 2.64% conversion rate, the lowest of 23 industries, so tight keywords and negatives matter.

Can bookkeepers use the word “accountant” in ads?

“Accountant” on its own is not one of the titles the model Uniform Accountancy Act reserves. It reserves “certified public accountant”, “CPA” and “public accountant”, and bars titles likely to be confused with them, such as “certified accountant”, “licensed accountant” and “registered accountant”. Rules vary by state, so check with your state board before using any title in ad copy.

The quickest win is usually the negative list: export your last 90 days of search terms, mark every job, course, software and do-it-yourself query, and add them before you add any new keywords.
