Auto Repair Shop Marketing: What Fills Bays in 2026

Auto repair shop marketing that fills bays in 2026 rests on four things: a complete Google Business Profile with a steady flow of reviews, Google Search ads and Local Services Ads for the moment a car breaks, reminders that bring existing customers back, and enough third-party reputation that AI assistants name you. Budget by job value and bay capacity, not by a flat monthly number.

In short:

  • Auto repair search ads convert at a 15.51% median rate at a $29.96 median cost per lead, the second-highest conversion rate of any industry in WordStream’s 2026 benchmarks.
  • Repair keyword costs vary by job: transmission keywords carry a $7.50 volume-weighted median CPC estimate and brakes $6.92, against $3.29 for tires (Clickem analysis of Keyword Planner data, October 2026).
  • “Car ac repair” searches run 9.5x higher in June than in December, and the peak landed in June or July in all five years from 2021 to 2026.
  • Google says its Google Verified badge is currently unavailable for auto categories in Local Services Ads, and LSA is moving into Google Ads as pay-per-lead Performance Max campaigns, starting with select advertisers in August 2026.
  • When we asked four AI assistants for an “honest mechanic”, honesty was a reason in 70% of repair answers and Claude cited Yelp in 14 of its 16 repair answers.

Clickem runs Google Ads and Meta ads for car dealerships, auto repair shops, body shops and auto lenders. This guide covers every channel a shop can use, as part of our work as an auto repair marketing agency. Campaign structure, negatives and call tracking for paid search have their own guide: Google Ads for auto repair shops.

What market is a repair shop marketing into?

A crowded one with a growing pool of old cars, which rewards the shop that is easiest to find and easiest to trust.

BLS counted 174,791 private auto repair and maintenance establishments in 2025, about half of them (85,899) general automotive repair (BLS QCEW, NAICS 8111; shops with employees only). The Auto Care Association puts the average light vehicle at a record 12.9 years old.

Old cars favor independents. In Cox Automotive’s 2025 Service Industry Study, dealers handled 29% of service visits overall, down from 33% in 2018, but only 24% of visits for vehicles over five years old. General repair shops took 27% of all visits, quick lubes 14% and tire stores 10%. How dealers fight back for that work is covered in our fixed ops marketing guide.

Price is not the gap people assume. Cox found average repair spend of $261 at dealerships in 2025 against $275 at general repair shops, while NADA reports a $186 average customer labor rate at franchised dealers (NADA Data 2025). “Cheaper than the dealer” is a weaker message than “close, clear on price, and honest”.

Which marketing channels fill repair bays, and what do they cost?

Search ads and your Business Profile fill bays this week. Reviews and reminders fill them next year. Here is each channel with the cost data that exists for it.

Channel What it costs (sourced) How you pay When it works When it does not
Google Business Profile and reviews Free; staff time to ask every customer Nothing Always: it feeds Maps, Gemini answers and LSA ranking When you ask only happy customers, which Google prohibits
Google Search ads Median CPC $4.35, conversion rate 15.51%, cost per lead $29.96 (WordStream 2026) Per click Urgent and high-ticket jobs, when phones are answered When calls go to voicemail or campaigns mix oil changes with transmissions
Local Services Ads Google publishes no price list; lead prices vary by location, job type and lead type Per valid lead Shops that answer fast and pass insurance and license screening No Google Verified badge for auto; 3 to 4 weeks of screening first
Meta ads (Facebook, Instagram) Traffic campaigns: median CPC $0.74, CTR 1.51% (WordStream 2026); no repair lead benchmark published Per impression or click Seasonal offers, retargeting past visitors, new location launches Catching someone whose brakes are grinding today
Retention (email, text reminders) Your shop software subscription; no media cost Subscription Shops with a customer list and service history New shops with no list yet
AI assistant answers No paid placement; built from reviews, Yelp, Maps and your site Nothing Shops with high review counts and plain, specific service pages Shops that exist only on Google

What this means for you: start with the two free channels, then add paid search for the jobs worth the most to you. The search numbers above are medians across WordStream client campaigns on Google and Microsoft Ads (13,474 US campaigns, April 2025 to March 2026), and a separate WordStream by LocaliQ dataset of 1,983 automotive campaigns ran higher for repair, at a $6.42 CPC and $42.10 cost per lead (LocaliQ, April 2025 to June 2026). Plan for a range, not a point.

What is a repair job worth, and what can you pay to win one?

Work it out per job type, because both the cost to win a job and the profit in it swing widely. Three inputs drive it: cost per click, the share of clicks that become leads, and the share of leads that book.

The table uses Keyword Planner CPC estimates from Clickem’s October 2026 dataset of 80 repair keywords, the WordStream 15.51% median conversion rate, and an example booking rate of 50%. The ticket and margin columns are example inputs, not data: use your own.

Job type CPC estimate (volume-weighted median) Cost per lead at 15.51% Cost per booked job at 50% booking Example ticket Example gross profit at 50%
Transmission $7.50 $48 $97 $2,500 $1,250
Brakes $6.92 $45 $89 $400 $200
AC and heating $6.58 $42 $85 $500 $250
General (“auto repair near me”) $5.28 $34 $68 $300 $150
Oil change $5.09 $33 $66 $80 $40
Battery $4.10 $26 $53 $200 $100
Tires $3.29 $21 $42 $600 $300

What this means for you: on these example inputs, a transmission job returns about 13 times what it cost to win, brakes about 2 times, and a first oil change loses money. Oil change ads only pay if those customers come back for the bigger work, so judge them on 12-month revenue per customer, not the first ticket.

Two cautions. Keyword Planner CPCs are bid-side estimates for single queries, and realized CPCs in a well-run account are usually lower: our repair median of $4.72 sits about 9% above WordStream’s realized $4.35. And conversion rate varies by job, so the single 15.51% figure flattens real differences. The full dataset is in our automotive Google Ads benchmarks.

Specialist terms cost more: “bmw repair near me” carries a $9.67 CPC estimate and “diesel mechanic near me” $8.00. Adding “near me” raised repair CPC estimates by a median of 15% across 18 matched pairs.

How much work can your shop actually take?

Less than most marketing plans assume. Bays are limited by technicians, and technicians are scarce.

Struggling with Google Ads campaigns? Book a meeting with Clickem

BLS counted 704,640 automotive service technicians and mechanics in May 2025, with a $50,620 median annual wage (BLS OEWS), and projects about 66,200 openings a year through 2035 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). Marketing that brings more cars than your techs can finish only lengthens waits, which shows up in reviews.

Run the capacity math before setting a budget. Say you have 4 technicians who each bill 6 hours a day, 22 days a month: that is 528 billable hours. If your average repair order takes 2.5 hours, you can finish about 211 repair orders a month. Subtract what your regulars already fill, and the remainder is the number of new jobs your marketing needs to buy.

When do repair searches peak?

Summer, mostly. Clickem’s five-year Google Trends analysis (October 2021 to September 2026) found repair demand is seasonal by job, and some popular beliefs are wrong.

Job Peak Low How strong
Car AC repair June (index 226), July (218) December (24) 9.5x peak to trough; June or July peak in 5 of 5 years
Repair and maintenance overall July (112) February (93) Mild, from 4 years of Keyword Planner data
Oil change July (112) December (89) 1.26x; July peak in 4 of 5 years
Tire shop July (111) January (86) 1.30x; general tire demand is a summer pattern
Winter and snow tires November (215), December (223) Summer 5.5x to 6.7x, but only 55,300 searches a month combined
Car battery replacement August (112) and January (111) March (86) Two humps; spring is the reliable low

What this means for you: raise budgets for AC work from late May and hold them through July, keep tire budgets up in summer, and do not assume winter is battery season alone. For scale, “tire shop near me” gets 2.24 million searches a month against 55,300 for winter and snow tires together.

Should a repair shop run Local Services Ads in 2026?

Usually yes, beside Search ads rather than instead of them. You pay per valid lead, not per click, but several things changed that older guides miss.

  • Categories: Google’s US list includes Auto Repair Shop, Brake Shop, Transmission Shop, Oil Change Service, Auto air conditioning Service and Car Battery Store, among others (Google). Availability varies by area.
  • No badge for auto: Google says “The Google Verified badge is currently unavailable for verticals in the auto, beauty, and dining categories.” Any pitch built on a badge for your shop is out of date.
  • Screening: auto repair shops need general liability, professional liability and garage keepers liability insurance, state licenses where required and background checks, and Google says the process takes 3 to 4 weeks on average (screening requirements).
  • What you are charged for: answered calls, missed calls in business hours where the caller holds over 20 seconds, texts, emails, voicemails and bookings. Repeat contact from the same number within 15 days is free (how leads work).
  • Bad leads: credits are automatic after a 30-day quality review, and the manual dispute button is gone. Google no longer credits “job type not serviced” leads, so set job types carefully.
  • Ranking: Google weighs your rating, number of reviews, response time, photos and verification checks (LSA ranking).
  • The migration: LSA campaigns are moving into Google Ads as “Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals” (Google). The first phase began in August 2026 for select US home and storefront service advertisers, with broader groups in late 2026 and the rest in 2027; Google does not say when auto shops move. Manual max-per-lead bidding ends at migration.

Our comparison of Local Services Ads and Google Ads covers which to start with.

What should a shop do with its Google Business Profile?

Fill every field Google offers and keep the review flow constant. LSA requires “a public and verified Google Business profile”, and the same profile is what Gemini links to in AI answers.

  • Services: add each job you want to be found for in the services editor, with descriptions. Google rejects custom service names that include prices or phone numbers (Google), so put prices in the description or on your site.
  • Messaging: Business Profile chat ended on July 31, 2024 (Google). Where it is offered, add a text or WhatsApp option, and make sure the listed number rings somewhere that is answered.
  • Reviews: ask every customer. Google’s policy bars businesses that “selectively solicit positive reviews from customers” or pay for reviews (Google), and the FTC’s rule at 16 CFR 465.4 bans incentives conditioned on a review’s sentiment. This is general information, not legal advice.

What do AI assistants say when someone asks for an honest mechanic?

They cite repair shop websites far more often than dealer websites, and they lean hard on reviews and on honesty. This comes from Clickem’s October 2026 test of 192 answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude across eight US cities, which included 64 answers to “Best auto repair shop in {city} for brakes?” and “honest mechanic in {city}”.

In those 64 repair answers, the shop’s own website was used as a source in 52%, against 19% for franchise dealer prompts. Review platforms appeared in 62%, Google Maps links in 36%, and directories or best-of lists in 28%. Still, 28 of the 64 answers cited third-party sources only.

Each assistant leaned on different sources for repair questions:

  • Claude cited Yelp in 14 of its 16 repair answers.
  • Gemini linked Google Maps place pages in 14 of 16 and cited no review site at all.
  • ChatGPT cited CARFAX in 9 of 16 and RepairPal in 5.
  • Perplexity linked shop websites in 15 of 16, and cited Reddit in 5 and Mechanic Advisor in 4.

The question changed the sources. For “honest mechanic”, Reddit appeared in 8 of 32 answers and Yelp in 13. For brakes, Mechanic Advisor appeared in 7 of 32 and RepairPal in 6.

The reasons the assistants gave for picking a shop are a ready-made checklist for your site and profiles. In repair answers: reviews and ratings 80%, honesty and no upselling 70%, pricing transparency 67%, years in business or local ownership 66%, specialist expertise 59%, convenience 58%, warranty 48% and certifications such as ASE 25%.

The AI shortlist and Google’s are different lists: only 31% of repair answers named any of the Google Maps top 3 for the same query. Across the full test, recommended businesses had a median of 459 Google reviews against 107.5 for skipped Maps top-20 listings, at the same 4.7 rating. Method and limits are in our automotive SEO guide.

What does a repair shop website need?

Plain-text answers to what customers and assistants ask: what you fix, on which makes, roughly what it costs, the warranty, and how to book. No images or PDFs for this content.

  • One page per major job (brakes, transmission, AC, diagnostics), each with what is included, a price range or starting price, your warranty terms and your certifications.
  • A tap-to-call number and a booking option on every page, above the fold on mobile.
  • Proof of honesty you can show: written estimates before work, old parts returned on request, photos of the problem sent by text. “Honest” was a reason in 70% of AI repair answers, and specifics are what make it believable.
  • Call tracking and form tracking connected to Google Ads, so you can see which job types book. Our conversion tracking guide covers the setup.

Few shop sites cover all of these basics. In Clickem’s 2026 audit of 176 auto repair shop websites, 74.4% of homepages (131/176) had a clickable phone link, but only 11.9% (21/176) embedded an online booking or shop-system widget, and 6.2% (11/176) showed a price for any named service. A starting price on your brake page puts you in a small minority.

Tracking is thinner still. Half of the repair shop homepages in the audit (88/176) showed no analytics tag and no ad pixel of their own in the page code, and a Google Ads tag was visible on 9.7% (17/176). Tags loaded through Tag Manager or a site builder such as Wix do not show in the HTML, so these are lower bounds, but if you cannot find your own tag, Google Ads cannot learn which calls and bookings came from your ads.

AI crawlers are rarely blocked by shops on purpose. Shop robots.txt files shut out OpenAI’s and Perplexity’s search crawlers on just 1.7% of shop sites (3/174), and all three block every crawler, Google included. Firewalls are another matter: 9.1% of shop sites (16/176) refused GPTBot’s user agent while serving a normal browser in our test from a cloud server, which shows a rule aimed at that user agent rather than proof the real crawler is blocked, so ask your host what its bot protection blocks.

How do reminders and retention fill bays?

They fill the cheapest bays you have, because you already paid to win that customer once. The first oil change in the job math above lost money; the visits after it pay it back.

Send reminders on your recommended interval, by time and estimated mileage, from your shop software’s service history. Follow up on declined work with the estimate attached, because the customer already trusts your diagnosis. Meta can back this up cheaply: an AC check offer shown to past customers in May runs at around WordStream’s $0.74 median click for repair traffic campaigns.

Which channels first, by type of shop?

Match the mix to whatever limits you.

If you are Do first Then
A new shop with no reviews Business Profile, review requests to every customer, Search ads on 2 or 3 job types LSA once you pass screening
An established shop with empty bays Search ads split by job type, LSA, call answering Meta retargeting of past customers
A full shop with a waitlist Raise prices or hire before buying more leads Shift ad budget to high-ticket jobs only
A specialist (European, diesel, transmission) Search ads on specialist terms, pages per make Reviews that name the make and the job
A multi-location group One clean profile per location, location pages, per-location budgets LSA per location; plan for the Google Ads migration

What this means for you: the right next dollar depends on whether your constraint is leads, trust or technicians. Body and detailing shops face different economics, covered in our auto body shop marketing and auto detailing marketing guides.

Common questions

How much should an auto repair shop spend on marketing?

There is no verified industry percentage, so work backward from capacity and job value. Count the new repair orders your techs can take each month, multiply by what you can pay to win one (the job math table shows how), and test that budget for 60 to 90 days with booked jobs tracked as conversions.

What is the best marketing for an auto repair shop?

For most shops, a complete Google Business Profile with steady reviews plus Google Search ads on high-value jobs. Repair search ads have a 15.51% median conversion rate and a $29.96 median cost per lead in WordStream’s 2026 data. Local Services Ads and reminders to past customers come next.

Are Local Services Ads worth it for mechanics?

They can be, because you pay per valid lead and invalid leads are credited automatically. Expect 3 to 4 weeks of screening with insurance and license checks, no Google Verified badge for auto categories, and a move into Google Ads pay-per-lead campaigns in late 2026 or 2027.

How do I get my shop recommended by ChatGPT or other AI assistants?

Build review volume and keep your Yelp, CARFAX and Google profiles complete. In our test, ChatGPT cited CARFAX in 9 of 16 repair answers, Claude cited Yelp in 14 of 16 and Gemini linked Google Maps in 14 of 16. Pages that state prices, warranty and certifications in plain text help Perplexity, which linked shop websites in 15 of 16 answers.

When should a repair shop spend the most on ads?

Summer for most shops. Repair searches peak in July, and car AC repair searches in June run 9.5x their December level. Battery replacement has two smaller peaks in August and January, with spring as the low.
